Privacy

What we collect

What you type into the program (names, dates, the service, the story), the photographs you add, and, when you pay, the email address you give Stripe. We do not ask for anything else and there are no accounts.

What it is used for

Only to make your program, slideshow and memorial page, and to send you the receipt and the link back to your files. Photographs are never used for anything else, never shared, and never sold.

How long we keep it

A session you do not pay for is deleted after 7 days. After a purchase, your photographs and the files made from them are deleted 30 days later, and so are your answers, unless your package includes a memorial page. A memorial page stays online for 12 months, or longer if you choose to keep it. It keeps its own copies of the photographs it shows, and your answers are kept while it is online, because the page is made from them. 30 days after the page ends, the answers, the page's words and photographs, and its guestbook are all deleted. We keep the record of each purchase (the date, the amount, the package and the email address) because the business's accounts need it. A page's web address is never given to another family, so an old printed program cannot lead to someone else's page.

Payments

Stripe handles the payment. We never see your card number. Stripe's own privacy policy applies to what you enter on their page.

Writing help

If you use "Help me write this" on the obituary step, or the free tool at Write an obituary, the notes you type there are sent to Anthropic, together with the name, the pronoun, the dates and the kind of service, and any memories from family and friends that you have included, so that it can draft an obituary for you to edit. If you use "Draft a life story from the memories" on the family page, the memories you have included are sent to Anthropic with the name, the pronoun, the dates and the obituary, so that it can draft a life story for you to edit. Nothing is sent unless you press one of those buttons, no photographs are ever sent, and neither the notes nor the drafts are kept: the free tool stores nothing at all. Anthropic's own privacy policy applies to what it receives.

Email

You get a receipt, a note when files are ready, a reminder before a memorial page ends, a reminder to download the final memory book if your package includes one, and a message when someone writes in a guestbook you moderate. Nothing else, unless you tick the box asking to hear from us.

Visits

If you agree when asked, we count visits with Google Analytics. Until you agree, and if you say no, nothing is sent to Google. Page addresses are reported without the private part that opens your program. You can change your answer at any time with Counting visits, at the bottom of this page. Memorial pages count how many times they were opened and nothing about who opened them.

Where visitors come from

When you arrive, this browser tab notes which site sent you here, such as a search engine. If you start a program, that is stored with it, and with your order, as one word, like "google" or "direct". It identifies no one and is never shared. On a paid order, the word stays with the record of that order. If you say no to counting visits, nothing about where you came from is kept.

Photographs and location

Location data embedded in photographs by phones is removed before they are used anywhere.

Photos and memories from family and friends

If you send people the link to share photos and memories, what they send is kept with your program: their name, how they knew the person, their memory, their photographs, and a scrambled form of their internet address that is used only to stop misuse. Only you see it, and nothing is used until you include it. It is deleted with your program: after 7 days if you do not pay, and 30 days after purchase if you do. You can turn the link off at any time. If your package includes the memory book, what you include is printed in it, and anyone with the link can download the book while the link is on and your files can still be downloaded.
